Concrete, Mineral and Chemical Admixtures

(a) Foam Used as Forms at Road Construction Project
Utah-based WW Clyde decided to use EPS Geofoam to create forms to shape concrete piers on a road and bridge project in Idaho. The process saved the company 200 man hours and an estimated $7,800 on materials. Read more.

(b) Protecting Dry Concrete from Damage and Improving Durability
Purdue researchers have developed a hydrophobic sealant that could prevent potentially damaging fluids from entering concrete pores. Read more.

(c) Lifespan of Bridge Construction Materials
Rutgers University has created a new facility "to study future performance and lifespan of materials and elements, as well as maintenance, rehabilitation and preservation techniques for aging highway bridges." The Bridge Evaluation and Accelerated Structural Testing system, or BEAST, is part of the university's Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation. It will "measure stresses and deterioration caused by extreme traffic and environmental loading on full-scale bridge systems" over a compressed time frame. Read more.

(d) Promise for Recycled Aggregate Use in Concrete

Research at University of Lisbon shows that concrete recycling is a feasible and ecological solution that the concrete industry should consider adopting. The use of recycled aggregates on new concrete seems a solution that could minimize the ecological footprint of this industry, enabling reductions of the amount of landfill disposal, quarry mining, and fossil emissions due to transportation. Read more.

(e) Decorative Concrete
Pigment selection, the type of cement, aggregate size and color, water content, mixing technique and finishing methods all have a role to play in the overall final appearance of the decorative concrete surface. Cement color is the starting point and the determining factor in what range of colors can be achieved. Read more.

Books
(a) Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete, Author: Jayant D. Bapat, CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group
Written for engineers, this book focuses on how to make more workable and durable concrete using mineral admixtures. For each mineral admixture, the book looks at manufacturing and processing, physical characteristics, chemical and mineralogical composition, quality control, and reported experiences. It also examines the provisions of national standards on the admixture’s addition to cement and concrete. Offering a deeper understanding of mineral admixtures, it encourages engineers to more effectively use these and other wastes in cement and concrete to support more sustainable growth of the cement and construction industry. Read More.

(b) ACI SP-305 Durability and Sustainability of Concrete Structures
This collection contains 48 papers presented at the First International Workshop on, “Durability & Sustainability of Concrete Structures” in Bologna (Italy), in October 2015. Read more.
