Cement Manufacturing


(a) ORC Generators
The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) expander converts the recovered thermal energy from a low grade waste heat source into kinetic energy, which is then converted into electrical energy by a generator. Read more


Concrete, Mineral and Chemical Admixtures
(a) Precast Concrete Facade Selected for 33-Storey Building
British architect David Chipperfield designed The Bryant, a 33-story residential building in New York City. In a video, Chipperfield discusses the design process and why precast concrete was used for the facade. Read more.


(b) Sustainable Design of Structures
The discussion and implementation of sustainable design is a reaction to global environmental crises, rapid growth of economic activity and human population, depletion of natural resources, damage to ecosystems, and loss of biodiversity. Read more.


(c) Longest concrete high-speed rail span built in Spain 
A 3,268-foot-long concrete bridge to be used for a high-speed rail line is under construction over the Almonte River in Spain. The main span for its arch is nearly 1,260 feet long, which will make it the largest span of HSR in the world. More than a dozen cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete box girders are being used. Read more.


(d) Conductive Concrete for De-Icing
Civil engineering professor Chris Tuan developed a concrete mix with steel shavings and carbon particles that conducts electricity to safely melt ice and snow. The concrete has been used on the 150-foot Roca Spur Bridge in Nebraska and has de-iced it for more than 10 years. Now the Federal Aviation Administration is considering its use on airport tarmacs. (e) Machine to Test Durability of Concrete Pavement
As part of VDOT’s accelerated pavement testing program, the new machine, called a heavy vehicle simulator (HVS), will test pavement by running a heavy wheel assembly back and forth across it. The 54-ton machine can produce the same wear and tear that cars and heavy trucks do to highways. Read more.  

(f) Remarkable Bridges Around the World
Impressive bridges around the world have been created using a variety of techniques and materials. This article looks at 20 of the "most impressive," including the 3,000-foot-long Magdeburg Water Bridge in Germany and a swinging pedestrian bridge in the UK. Read more.  

(g) High Density Concrete
Tunnel boring is complete in the UK's massive Crossrail project, and a dense concrete called MagnaDense is being installed in part of the slab. The material minimizes noise and is twice as dense as normal concrete because of its natural iron ore content. Readmore.


(h) Argos delivers first ready mixed concrete with recycled carbon dioxide

Argos has produced America’s first ready mixed concrete made with recycled carbon dioxide thanks to a newly formed agreement between Argos of Atlanta, Georgia, and CarbonCure Technologies of Nova Scotia, Canada. Read more.

(i) Concrete to Enhance Acoustics
Valley Public Radio in California is constructing a performance studio and wanted to get just the right acoustics. The design includes walls with no right angles, which helps to reduce sound deflection, and concrete pads on the floor that are "acoustically isolated" from the structure and one another. In addition, the concrete floor sits on a high-tech acoustic material. Read more.


(j) Solar Roadway

France is moving forward with a "Positive Energy" initiative to add solar panels to 621 miles of road. The panels are glued onto the roadway and can handle the weight of six-axle vehicles. This stretch of road could collect enough energy for 5 million people. A Dutch company has already used solar panels on 328 feet of road in Holland. Read more.

(l) 3D Printed Public Housing
Singapore has been one of the busiest locations in the 3D printing industry lately. The city-state has made 3D printing a major priority, with several large centers and organizations dedicated to the technology. Read more.


(m) Movable Scaffolding

The first section of the Mersey Gateway Project viaduct in the UK is done. It's being built with a movable scaffolding system that acts as a giant concrete mold. The first section took 1,499 cubic yards of concrete and 34 hours. Read more.

Stencils can add a decorative touch to concrete floors, basements, walkways, patios and garages. Read more.

The growing number of aesthetic options with decorative concrete are making the material sought-after, and having a recognized brand matters. Read more.

(q) High strength Concrete for Super-Slim Tall Structures
Super-slim, supertall skyscrapers are gaining in popularity as the amount of buildable land diminishes and as advances in technology and materials push engineering to new limits. Read more.  


(r) Color Problems with Precast Concrete

Efflorescence on precast, colored concrete walls at a $117 million event center in Sioux Falls, S.D., is causing concern, even though it's a natural process. Read more.

(s) NIST Net-Zero House
Tweaking ventilation and temperature control systems, along with a mild winter, helped the experimental net-zero-energy house at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) quadruple the amount of surplus energy it sent to the power grid during its second year-long demonstration. (t) Shotcrete to Battle El Nino

California is spending $8 million to ward off El Nino and prevent erosion along the Pacific Coast Highway. Among the projects are one in Malibu where 1,500 cubic yards of shotcrete were sprayed onto a hillside and then reinforced with thousands of tons of boulders to create a 1,200-foot-long wall between it and the Pacific Ocean. (u) Strengthening Concrete with Crystalline Coating
The application of crystalline materials as external coatings can serve to prevent damage to existing concrete structures by entering and filling the very channels of ingress for corrosive chemicals - the pores and cracks that permeate the building material. Read more.
